This chapter argues that while cadavers found niche markets among the Lancastrian elite, the townsmen of eastern England, and the clergy of Kent and East Anglia, they were never more than a minority taste.

A cadaver monument, or transi, is a type of church monument featuring a sculpted effigy of a skeleton or decomposing dead body, characteristic of the Late Middle Ages. It served as a reminder of death, the afterlife, and the vanity of mortal life.

The transi or cadaver monument of Guillaume de Harcigny is of great interest to historians and art historians alike for a number of different reasons. Cadaver monuments began to appear in the later fourteenth century, which makes this one of the earliest examples.

France has a long history of cadaver monuments, though not as many examples or varieties survive as in England. One of the earliest and anatomically convincing examples is the gaunt cadaver effigy of the medieval physician Guillaume de Harsigny (d. 1393) at Laon.
